It seems the garden isn’t the only place at Flamingo Estate where one finds beauty and pleasure. There, beneath a canopy of drying flowers, the wallpaper makes a lyrical backdrop for a chic assemblage of furnishings by the likes of Gabriella Crespi and Hermès. Although the operation has since outgrown the modest shack, the Goat Shed remains “the beating heart of the garden and the orchard, the place where we all gather,” according to Christiansen. To showcase the toothsome paper, Christiansen has wrapped the walls of the Goat Shed, an erstwhile goatherd’s cabin dating to the 1930s, which formerly served as Flamingo Estate’s production hub and is still used informally as a workshop where the brand distills many of its botanical ingredients. “We live in drought-stricken California, so we wanted to lean into the things that thrive here, things that make California special,” he says. “We share a love of all things botanical.” As one might imagine, the hand-painted design pays homage to local flora and fauna, with painterly images of flowers (campion, tassel flower, cliff rose, aster) and birds (jay, parrot, oriole, owl) interlaced with soaring cacti. “I’m a fan of de Gournay, and they’re a fan of mine,” Christiansen says of the affinity that propelled the project. Christiansen’s latest venture-an enchanting wallpaper designed in collaboration with the venerable British house of de Gournay-moves the brand’s ethos of “pleasure from the garden” squarely into the world of home furnishings.ĭetail of the pattern. In just a few short years, creative guru Richard Christiansen, the mastermind behind the Flamingo Estate enterprise, has placed the brand’s imprimatur on an ever-growing array of products, from fresh produce and flowers to soaps, lotions, and fragrances as well as a host of biotic goodies for the pantry. One can practically hear the voice of Joni Mitchell wafting over the apiaries and vegetable beds at Flamingo Estate: “We are stardust, we are golden, and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.” Perched in the hills above Los Angeles, the fertile seven-acre property-and the organic lifestyle brand that shares its name-celebrates the glories of Southern California and the rewards of harnessing the goodness of nature.
